“Wannabe” was co-written by the Spice Girls together with Richard Stannard and Matt Rowe. The song’s fundamental highlighting is the union and solidarity of friends, an implicit challenge to any “wannabe” lovers.
It was shot in April of 1996, and was directed by Jhoan Camitz and produced by Mod Films. The video is shot at one continuous take.
When the music video was released and first appeared on UK cable satellite network The Box, it was selected so often that the video was being aired up to seventy times a week at its peak and still remains the most requested track in the channel’s history.
The song debuted at number eight in the United World Chart, reaching a peak position of two for six weeks and staying thirty-one weeks on the top ten. It ended at number three at the 1996 Year End Chart and eighteen at the 1997 Year End Chart. In March 2007, the United World Chart ranked “Wannabe” as the forty-five most successful song in music history. Referring to that same list, “Wannabe” is also the most successful song released by a female group.
